Abstract Requirements & Deadlines

Students are invited to submit abstracts for one or both of the following: 

  • Competitive Student Research Lightning Session - Judged

  • Non-Competitive Student Posters 

Required for submission

December 20, 2021 – closes at 8 AM
Notification of acceptance January 4, 2022

Final draft of abstracts

Non-competitive PDF poster file submission

January 18, 2022 – due by 8 AM

Competitive Student Research Lightning Session: PowerPoint file submission

January 24, 2022 – due by 8 AM

Abstracts: Must be uploaded in a Word file (PDFs will not be accepted) at the bottom of this form. Abstracts must be:

  • Informative, providing scope, purpose, experimental approach, significant results, and major conclusions.
  • Clear, concise, one paragraph summary with no more than 275 words.
  • Formatted as single-spaced, using 12-point font.
  • Include presentation title and names and affiliations of all authors. 
  • Will be posted the event website and in the conference proceedings

Competitive Student Research Lightning Session - Judged

Competition Requirements

  • Currently enrolled students and those graduated within the past 1 year qualify. Both graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit.
  • One student per accepted presentation may attend the full conference at no cost.
  • Regardless of conference attendance, students delivering accepted presentations must register for the conference.
  • A monetary award will be available to the top student presentation entries.
  • Your major professor must approve your submission (please upload this form completed and signed your professor).

Lightning Presentations

  • Abstract must be presented live (no recordings) via Zoom during a special afternoon session on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
  • Students should prepare slides being mindful of only having 5 minutes to present orally.
  • Presentation judges will consider adherence to time as a determining factor in placement in the competition.
  • Presentations will be 5 minutes in length with an additional 2 minutes for Q&A. 

Non-Competitive Student Posters 

If you'd like to submit a poster to be displayed on the website and not participate in the competitive student lightning round presentations, please follow the abstract submission requirements above. 

  • Poster will be displayed on the CA-ASA website. 
  • PDF file is due by 8 AM on January 18, 2022. Instructions will be sent upon acceptance. 
  • Maximum size of 44.5" wide x 44.5" high. 

Tips for Poster Preparation

  • Concentrate on a few main points, rather than crowding too much information into the poster.
  • Highlight your title, headings, and subheadings with colors and colored lines.
  • Format headings and subheadings to be at least 25% larger than the text copy in bold or semi bold.
  • Keep your text in short, concise, legible statements. Minimize complete sentences and paragraphs.
  • Text in upper and lower case letters is more readable than all capitals. Text should be at least 1/4-inch (0.64 cm) tall and readable from a distance of 6 feet (1.8 m)
